home made brushless motor battery: Align 3 cell li-po 11.1v Reed switch 8 neodymium magnets no bearings were used (performance would have improved greatly if bearings were used on the spindle) neodymium are real strong magnets the setup i had used 8 neo magnets but with my setup it was really hard to get the magnets positioned in the proper place... this is partly due to the fact that i glued magnets on while eyeballing the position of the magnets. From what i saw when i used four magnets it actually had more RPM than 8 magnets because 4 neo mags accepted alot more human error. but if were some how able to perfectly align 8 magnets im sure the results would be great. as for your question "Have you ever tried using more powerful magnets?" im pretty sure neodymium is the strongest a average consumer can buy. "a heaver wire?" a heavier wire isnt exactly the best thing when making a electro magnet. What you want is length not thickness of wire. the more times you wrap the wire around the nail the stronger the magnet will me so i suggest getting allot of wire i would say 150ft is on the small side if you are looking for a good electro magnet. "more votage?" Sure more voltage would have given me more power but if you are using a kit from simple motors it probably comes with the same reed switch as mine which means you will have to becareful when increasing the voltage because the reed switch works on two metal strips touching and not touching if you have too high of a voltage the two metal strips might weld together. if you are looking to use the maximum voltage from the reed switch i suggest you buy a couple to test your self. I did not go beyond 11.1v because i only had one reed switch and with school extra credit deadline coming up so soon i couldn't afford to have the reed switch break on me and not have a working motor at all. Also I didn't have to go buy the battery because i had it from my RC helicopter( i tried saving money since it was a small school project). If i had a stronger battery a that time i probably would have used it Also if you get a higher voltage battery you might want to get a heat sink for the electromagnet because at 11.1V my electro magnet got very HOT withing 10seconds i used hot glue to glue the electro magnet in place(not the best way to do things) and the electromagnet just melted the glue causing the electromagnet to get pull into the magnets.
